Formentera: Deceleration like in a picture book

Formentera is the epitome of marvellous Caribbean sandy beaches with crystal clear water. Here, life tempo is slowed down and relaxation is set as a top priority - the best conditions for a yacht holiday. And this island can do much more!

The smallest Balearic island may really be a little paradise and it is also the last one in the Mediterranean that seems to be out of date. The magic word in Formentera is "easy going" - to set the pace, slow down and find the rhythm of timelessness. And the longer you stay, the more you feel the special Formentera feeling that many island lovers talk about. You don't have to develop this attitude to life with yoga or meditation, Formentera does it all by itself. So our first tip is: whatever you do on Formentera - do it in relaxed way.

Simply outstanding beautiful: apart from July and August, Formentera is not only a total “chill-out zone” for holiday-makers and connoisseurs, but also very varied: a green oasis and a true natural paradise, the original character of which were preserved due to strict coastal protection and construction ban. A completely different world awaits you on every few kilometers: sometimes Caribbean flair with breathtaking, white sandy beaches and turquoise blue water, sometimes 100 meter high rocky coast, sometimes well-tended villages with colorful fishing boats in the harbor, sheep in the pasture, pine forests as well as desert-like lunar landscapes. Not to forget - the culinary delights in the hidden taverns or at the “barefoot dinner” in the sand. And all of this in just 83 square kilometers.

Anchor on Illetas beach

Sophisticated and relaxing at the same time: in summer it is the epicentre of excellence for Vips & Co on board of their luxury yachts. The most famous beach in Formentera offers an incomparable environment to enjoy a day of relaxation, sun, delicious food and music. The restaurants are all easily accessible by taxi boat and the wide variety will please everyone: e.g. Juan y Andrea, an idyllic beach bar with popular celebrities and excellent fresh fish or paella (but also correspondingly expensive!) or the Es Molí de Sal, an old mill on a rock with a sensational view.

Legendary: long live sunset hour!

A recurring highlight on Formentera: the sunset hour. The best way to enjoy the view of the setting sun is at a scene like the Pirate bus, a wooden shack that was originally a bus and where celebrities like Bob Dylan have made sound at sunset. Or on the private beach of the Hotel La Savina, which invites you every Saturday with the Sunset Emotions concept.

Very popular as a sundowner: the aromatic herb liqueur Hierbas (pure or as a cocktail), which has been produced on the island since 1880 and only later moved to Ibiza - preferably from the original Mari Mayans with the twig in the bottle.

Art and hippie in San Fernando

The most authentic village on Formentera for all those who want to recreate the hippie atmosphere of the 60s can be found in the heart of the island in San Fernando (Ferran). A highlight is the art handcraft market (from 8.30 p.m. in the church square) with lots of activities in the surrounding bars and restaurants including live music. Here the otherwise rather sleepy village really comes to life. An institution and THE meeting point is the “Fonda Pepe”, where hippies and celebrities have been coming and going since the 1960s. Island cuisine: it's worth trying!

In Formentera it is always worth trying typical dishes, especially the Ensalada Payesa (a farmer's salad with stockfish), Burrida de Ratjada (braised rays with chopped almonds), Formentera lobster, Bullit (a rice dish with fish) or Frit de Bestiar (a vegetable pan with lamb). For dessert there is a well-known flaó (a kind of cheese cake) or cazuela de requesón (a milk dish). You will definitely get full there! More about the cuisine in Formentera >>

Es Pujols - the quirky center

The former fishing village has blossomed into a hotspot and has been developed for tourism: there are plenty of restaurants, hotels and nightlife. The matching beach Playa de es Pujols offers a perfect mixture of sand and rocks, is excellent for snorkeling and offers a great photo background with its old fishing boats.

Neptune grass - makes water shamelessly clean!

Not so many visitors of Formentera know that there are dreamy, white sandy beaches and crystal-clear water with a rather inconspicuous plant: the Neptune grass (Posidonia Oceanica), which forms the world's largest meadows between Ibiza and Formentera. The “all-rounder” cleans the water, binds carbon dioxide, is a habitat for marine animals, provides oxygen and thus forms a perfect ecosystem. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, the Neptune Grass in Formentera is home to barracudas, dolphins and sea turtles.

#stay active: get off the yacht, get on your bike!

In addition to the yacht, one thing is part of the Formentera lifestyle: be on the go with your own bike - and you can borrow it anywhere on the island (from approx. € 10 per day). Around 20 bike routes lead you through dunes, vineyards, pine forests and untouched nature. And you don't even have to be particularly sporty because there is actually only one slope (in the area of La Mola). Here you can borrow a bike >>
